The Shadow Do hand combination is well varied. We include poon sao (circling block), we open up with tiger strikes, and we follow up with hooks and uppercuts. Our focus is on stepping through with the side kick. It is very important that the mechanics here are clear, and FITPROS you must delineate the difference between the side kick and the round kick. This strike is thrown slightly differently by different cultures and styles, and REMEMBER: there is NO wrong or right. As far as the most effective way to throw, for maximum speed/power/stability, here are the important aspects; 1) internal rotation of the hip (very often NOT the case in Chinese practicioners, interestingly) 2) a tight chamber, in conjuction with a coiled core and upper body, allowing for explosive extension and proper side alignment in the frontal plane during delivery 3) dorsiflexion (toes to shin)/eversion and supination (flexing the "blade" of the foot, the lateral arch, and turning the foot toward the floor) 4) an accordion-like rechamber of the kick post-delivery. IF you have a field, a court, or a large studio, these kicks would progress forward, setting up the next combination a few feet from where the original one started, and stepping behind the kicking leg with the rear leg, equating to a stealing step side kick (Tal Bo Chai Toy), a Bruce Lee favorite. This is a wonderful drill to give to clients or students, either on or off the beat, but coolest if they progress as a flash mob forward with an overhead shot or a forward facing video capture. The HIPBOX combo is slick power punching, reduces you as a target for counterpunching, and makes it very difficult to block all 3 shots on either side. This drill can be repeated for full rounds, is actually HARDER when done properly on one side, and can be done from fighting stance moving in any direction. Enjoy!
